I like to do strips like this to build anticipation of what will happen next. This is by Joda Thayer, who did Few and Far Between (and currently does a Chipmunk and a Lizard).
Few and Far Between featured the Falling Man, a mysterious figure who falls out of the sky shouting "Hoko Poloko", and then runs off. I'm not sure if I wrote this week with Joda in mind; it's been long enough that I don't really remember. It can't have been entirely a coincidence.
No, I didn't have any idea what Caleb's titular impressive trick was. Didn't when I wrote it either. I do that a lot; mentioning a trick or a joke, then writing around the trick or the punchline.
The third fellow there is Goliath, the manager who doesn't show up much. I really ought to have mentioned his name. The stairs to the bed of nails is a nice touch. Again, spikes when the plot calls for it.
Is it any wonder Brisbane didn't exactly befriend everyone else in the Minerva Theatre? And there must've been other people there.
