Seriously, I have no idea how payment worked in vaudeville. It wouldn't surprise me if some theatres didn't pay up-and-coming talent - you'd work and, if you were good, you'd get noticed and hired on. Otherwise, you wouldn't.

Surprisingly, I didn't research how long vaudeville songs were. They're usually longer than modern songs, with more singing. Many of them have long, complex choruses. You know "Take me out to the Ball Game"? That's the chorus of a song.
