Alright, so Caleb and Hodges don't like each other. Why is Caleb hitting on Hodges? I mean, even with the convoluted gender confusion plot, that makes no sense. This comic got taken out of the Best-Of Run and if this weren't the Complete Archives, it'd get taken out of here too.
Anyhow, Hodges' gender never was explicitly revealed.
Hodges' shirt is cotton. Or maybe silk. Definitely not burlap. It's everyone else who gets the cheap, uncomfortable clothing, so they don't wear it out too quickly. This was inspired by some of the menial jobs I'd had and the low-quality company shirts that they'll charge you $35 each for if you don't return them when you quit.
They did, actually, which caused a decent amount of battlefield confusion. I still don't know why Caleb shows up in the last panel; I hope I thought it was really funny at the time.
Yes, you saw this coming. I think it's funny because you see it coming.
